On a 2023 if you don’t press the start/stop button prior to exiting the vehicle the headlights and other items will stay on. If you press the stop/start button prior to opening the door the lights stay on briefly, per the programming, and then turn off.

Twice in 18 months of ownership I noticed the headlights remained on hours later. I had to manually turn them off.

The car is garaged with Auto always engaged. Even in broad daylight the headlights will come on when I pull in. But they always turn off a few minutes later -- except for those two times. I can't be 100% sure I didn't inadvertently change the setting with my knee, however.

We have the same problem with our 2021 X5 xDrive40i. The dealer suggested locking the car, which works, but we hate locking the car in our own garage. The dealer also suggested pressing the radio volume knob for 3 seconds after turning off the ignition. That seems to resolve the issue, too, but also a pain. Why can’t the damn lights just turn off like they’re supposed to! Would sure love to see one of these software updates resolve the issue.

I've got the same year and model as you, mine turn off automatically without me having to lock the car, press the radio volume knob or standing on my head stacking BB's or any other dealer suggested rain dance...they work as they should. Maybe the only diff between mine and yours, from a design standpoint, might be the iDrive s/w version.
You "could" try disconnecting the 12v battery for 20 or so minutes and see if that helps - just an idea. Some pull off the neg and pos leads and short them together to cause all stored energy in the car to drain.

it’s likely not a software version issue as previously mentioned but rather, driver behavior. it could be the way you shut down the vehicle before exiting the car. after parking the car in the garage, do you open the door which conveniently shuts off the engine automatically?

if so, that’s the issue. despite it being a safety feature (shutting off the engine when the door opens), doing so leaves the car in an idle state. It needs to go into a standby state. to accomplish this, you need to press the Stop button to turn off the engine first BEFORE opening the door to exit the car.

let us know how this works out for you.

Is this a model specific thing? My 2022 40i does not do this.

doesn't do what? when you open the door while the engine is running, the engine doesn't shut off?

it can depend on which drive mode you're in, ASS settings, maybe coding involved... but shutting the engine off when the door opens is the vehicle's default safety behavior likely to prevent roll-aways

Correct, the engine does not shut off. Most commonly I do this when collecting the mail from the roadside mailbox. Sport individual setting is always on to defeat the ASS.

Not fully. I have a 2019 and have ASS enabled but mine rarely will shut off when I open the door. It will once and awhile but I have never been able to determine a pattern as to when.

But of course on my M340i it is very rare that it stays running. I have always leaned towards the difference being one is a midl hybrid and the other is not but since it doesn't bother me I never looked into it further.
