I had the pleasure of dropping mine off at the dealership for a bit of a tailgate mishap this afternoon.

Picked up the kiddos from school this afternoon and they had their backpacks and a bunch of stuff in their hands. I got out of the X5 opened up the tailgate and started to toss stuff back there. Didn’t realize when I closed the tailgate one of the backpack straps was hanging over the lower half of the tailgate and so the top came down and tried to latch right over it. Well, it somehow got lodged in there really well and the locking mechanism would neither full engage or disengage so the tail gate was completely stuck and would not open nor latch closed so as to keep the interior lights from staying on or telling the vehicle that it was closed. Spent a good 45 minutes messing with it at home and couldn’t get it to budge and zero luck with locating a manual release latch.

I took it down to the dealership and the service advisor had no luck. He took it back to the shop foreman and he had no luck either. So now it’s been left there over night so they can start removing some of the panels in the cargo area to try and get it to dislodge.

Obviously won’t be covered under warranty so who knows how much this is going to cost in the end. Starting cost is $265 for them to get working on it and I’m sure will only go up from there depending upon how many billable hours this takes…luckily they are putting it in a battery tender so my battery won’t be dead in the morning and be yet another added expense to all this.

So fair warning to those tossing some backpacks back there, triple check the area is clear before you go pushing that close button on the tailgate!

That sucks! Similar situation with my Lexus RX350. Mine was covered under warranty as the tailgate just got stuck and wouldn’t unlatch all of a sudden. Nothing that I did to get it stuck but they kept it for 2 days and finally got it open again.

Oh man, I hope it doesn’t take them two days…can’t imagine what that bill will be like.

That sucks. I hope the bill isn't too outrageous. Working in the ER I've come to realize how doing the simplest common everyday things like in this case putting some backpacks in back, can screw up things like you wouldn't have imagined.

Picked up the X5 just a bit ago. All fixed and it was $265. They said they had to cut a trim piece out to gain access to the lock mechanism but I for the life of me can’t see anything missing in the cargo area or on the tailgate itself. Guess I should have had him show me where it was done and the piece they said they would need to order. I’ll give it another look later on when I get home but I guess if I can’t see it there is no point I going back once they get the part in and paying for that item. 🤷🏻‍♂️

there should be a manual unlock/unlatch for the tailgate as they have on their other models with enclosed trunks

I haven't looked. Do they have that on SUV's where you could just climb up to the seats and go out the door?

Out of sight, out of mind! Glad it was relatively cheap and quick fix.

I’m referring to their sedans like the 5-series. we have one which has an emergency unlocking cable

the issue in SUVs is not about escaping the cargo area like one would from a closed trunk of a sedan. it’s for issues like member chicago’s or other reports of the tailgate not unlocking/unlatching by electronic controls only

Right, I know they are in the cars with regular trunks. I always figured they were there incase the mafia locked you in the trunk and you needed to escape.

Yeah, I’m pretty shocked there was no manual release to be found. I spent a good 45 minutes back there in the cargo area trying all kinds of different things to get the latch to disengage fully. It’s pretty frustrating that there isn’t something similar to those trunk releases.

right. my point is that SUVs should have a manual tailgate release, too, not for escape, but for the aforementioned opening issue

Right. I just hadn't considered the manual opening option as much. I'll have to go look at my X3

I hope if that ever happened, they would at least be kind enough to leave the box of cannoli's in the trunk with you

Most put into a trunk aren't aware of it.
