slow charging speed on new chargepoint install

Hi,

My electrician just installed a charge point through a wire he ran that’s a 6/2 roughly 75 feet, hardwire setup 60amp breaker. I had 25% battery on my 45e and I see after plugging it in that it will take 9 hours to charge.

Why is it taking so long? Should be roughly 5.5 hours from empty I thought?

The charge amp setting in the car is set to 16a so not sure what’s wrong. The chargepoint app is set to 60a.

Thanks in advance.

First, safety is issue. Please set your max charge current to 48A. 60A breaker with 6/2 mn-b is rated at 60A peak but 48A sustained load. EV charging is a sustained load.

In charge point app, it should show you what is the kW the car is being charge at. Check that number. For 45e, 16A charging (which you said you confirm by looking at the car’s charging screen, right?), you should get around 3.5-3.8kW if it is on 240V supply. The fact you use 6/2, I wonder if the white wire is actuall neutral instead of -120V phase via a two pole breaker. If it is the case, you are at L1. But check charg point app for kW, it should be a good indication.

My chargepoint app says it is charging at 1.98 kWh. The car says 16 amps for sure. I don’t know about the rest though.. what do I do?

Your electrician wire 120V for you. 120v x 16A = 1920W.

Call him/her back and fix this for you. It is a simple fix. Just need a two pole breaker, switch 1 wire, and add some labeling.

It is extreme uncommon for licensed electricians to wire 240A with */2 wire. They usually and should use */3 to avoid any code compliance issue

I also check NEC. If the wire is done with Romex, the 6 gauge should have capacity of 55A peak and 44A sustained. If wire is MC or THHN in metal conduit, then peak is 75A, sustain is 80% of it, 60A. Please ask electrician and adjust charge point max current accordingly. It should match the sustained load capacity, not peak capacity

You’re awesome. I called chargepont and they confirm that it is only charging at 120v. Electrician is coming back. His brother did the breaker side and he did the charger. Maybe it wasn’t wired correctly. I hope this is the case. Will keep you posted.
The wire says colonial flex NM-B 600v 6/2 with ground (something illegible) 5. It’s a 75 foot run all indoors through the basement ceiling into an attached garage. He said it was fine for 60a breaker/48a charging for a Tesla. I took his word.. did I get ripped?

Electrician came back. Switched the black and white wire on the Chargepoint and got 240v. He said it shouldn’t have mattered but anyway it works now. Thanks guys!
