Perhaps I'm just misreading it but a stop sale doesn't prevent a vehicle from being shipped to the dealer. They are shipped and held at the dealers until a remedy can be applied. They don't wait at the factory of that to happen.

Correct, but they release the car to the dealer (probably some electronic categorization) so that the car shows on their inventory list. Until the car is “released to the dealer” the dealer cannot sell the car as it is not in their system. My guess is that it is some electronic turn over from the factory to the dealership.

Yes, that is the stop sale although the factory isn't involved at that point. The VIN will show the Stop Sale attached to it until the remedy is applied. Until that happens the vehicle is not eligible to be sold.

That must be a different one, this came out on Tuesday, and is for the front seatbelts. What exactly for the seatbelts? Nobody seems to have an answer for that.

Can you look up your VIN and see what stop sale is associated with it and let us know? You CA could be correct but often are not.

Yes, they are supposed to show up. What is different internally is the indicator for the stop sale not allowing the vehicle to be processed as sold.

Called BMW customer service today.

Called BMW customer service and was told that the sticker on the door jamb has either the wrong tire pressure for either the front or rear tires or maybe both. They have no idea when this will be remedied. I have been driving BMW's for almost 30 years, guess I should maybe start shopping for another car as BMW doesn't think their customers are smart enough to deal with that until they can get the correct stickers!!!

Did you look up your VIN at this site? If it references "STOP025543" its the seatbelt and not the sticker.

So, is it now confirmed that the problem requires parts and can't be fixed by a software update? I still have a glimmer of hope that this can be a quick fix, but I might have to adjust my expectations now.

I don’t think so, we still have no idea what about the front seat belts is causing the stop sale. I did find out it affects about 3300 vehicles with 1000 of them on the road and the rest on hold.

Customer care mentioned today there was a “24V-XXXX” on the stop sale now, meaning they were working on getting a NHTSA recall assigned to it. Thought that meant it would be a couple weeks at least until it was resolved. Of course it was one persons opinion but at least it was something.

That's crazy. It is that bad huh? Given the number of vehicles affected I really hope they can fix it promptly.

I’m guessing Billy-Bob forgot to check the calibration date on his torque wrench for two weeks, but it could also be bolts that were out of spec. With these plants running lean they usually only have day(s) worth of parts. Coming up with a couple weeks worth might be more work than one would assume.

Or they could just have them delivered next day via Amazon Prime.

Hope this means that they have a fix and are close to ready to deal with the recall.

My AI bot (perplexity) told me:

"When an automaker determines a safety defect exists, they are required by law to notify NHTSA within 5 business days. NHTSA then assigns an official recall campaign number in the format "24V-XXXX" for that year.

The automaker must provide NHTSA with a proposed remedy, customer notification plan, and other details for NHTSA's approval before proceeding with the recall.

So in summary, seeing a "24V-XXXX" code indicates:
- The automaker has determined a safety defect exists
- They have notified NHTSA as legally required
- NHTSA has opened an official recall investigation with that campaign number
- A recall announcement to owners and a stop sale is imminent or already in effect

- NHTSA reviews and approves the automaker's proposed recall plan, including the remedy, owner notification process, and other details.
- The automaker notifies all registered owners of the affected vehicles about the recall and provides instructions on getting the free repair.
- If the defect poses an imminent risk of crashing or injury, NHTSA may issue a consumer advisory or warning to stop driving the affected vehicles until they are repaired.
- The automaker provides the necessary replacement parts and repair instructions to its dealerships to perform the recall remedy.
- Owners take their vehicles to authorized dealerships for the free repair under the recall."

This fits the timeline of the initial stop sale on 5/7 and a filing with the NHTSA 5 business days later.

That is the code for the remedy. Once that is performed the stop sale should be lifted.
