Had the transmission fluid changed. Figured since I was doing a optional service they would have been gracious enough to do the update to the Idrive but not so lucky

Not odd at all but normal. Very few dealers will perform an update unless it is part if a warranty repair or you are paying them. If you choose the latter many will make you sign a statement waiving your warranty should anything go wrong. There are still a few who will do an update out of customer goodwill but those are few and very far between. The SIB from BMWNA reminding dealers that they will not be paid unless the update is part of warranty work pushed a lot of dealers to performing no updates otherwise.

Interesting. They updated mine from 8 to 8.5 after my screen had gone black. Then again, I’m sure that was warranty work being performed to get the screen functioning again. I just assumed they would do the updates per anyone’s request. I guess not per your comment.

Needs to be on level ground

I'm very new to BMW ownership and noticed my new car (used 420i) would not apply the iDrive software update that was loaded and ready to go, but as I found out something potentially useful for other forum members I thought I'd share my experience.

I read this thread and tried out some of the ideas like hard-rebooting iDrive (holding the volume button for 30 seconds, or 70 seconds etc), charging the car battery, but to no avail, iDrive just kept saying "Preparations complete for the upgrade to 11/2023.50". I had made sure my iPhone was connected on WiFi as well as Bluetooth, but still nothing would work.
Then finally I remembered a little instruction in the owners manual to have the car on a level surface, so I moved it off my steep driveway to the road surface and immediately it offered me the option to install the update. So there we go.... it really does need the car to be on a flat surface!

My dealer refused to install an update during my last service. Told me some updates are VIN specific. This is the 4th update that has refused to install on our vehicle.

I think they have contests to see who can make up the most creative reasons for not doing it.

How long did you leave it on level ground for before it offered you the update? overnight?

I agree with TurtleBiy: they’re being creative. This is the 4th update my G05 cannot install. The phone & upload is flawless (every time), the brake is on the concrete is level, I’ve killed chickens and rats, tied a yellow ribbon.
The dealer/service was eventually honest to say “major major issue, so bad that BMW Deutschland will not reimburse us warranty time for s/w update SO we just can’t / won’t do it.”
Don’t forget to park on level concrete.

It was immediate. The car was already showing the page for the Remote Software Update where it says "preparations completed for the update" whilst I was sat on the driveway. I'd just charged the battery (as I've seen that as a requirement) and I wanted to see if that had resolved the issue, but it hadn't....it was still stuck on this screen. So I rolled off the steep driveway onto the flat road surface and the message immediately changed to 'do you want to install the update'. From there, about 20 minutes later I got a message on my phone telling me the update was done.
I had the key in the car as I started the install process, but then took the key with me when I left the vehicle (so hence clearly it doesn't need to be in the car during the update, only at the start of the install).
I should also note, this was from 03/2023 update to 11/2023.

I've parked my 2019 X5M50i on a flat surface in the same spot a previous upgrade worked (in my garage). Had it on battery tender for a week. In park. No joy. Always get the same message the system will let me know when it is ready to update. Shows the software was uploaded to the vehicle from the phone. Just refuses to install it under any circumstance. It's in a death loop. It might say after you drive the car we'll update it but then it says the car needs to cool down for 30 minutes before you can update it. then you get in the car in half hour or hour and says will let me know when the update can begin. I gave up two months ago. I'll let the dealer force the update or just leave it. don't care anymore. Don't even know if I'm missing any new features/functionality from the last revision.

FWIW, the post was in jest....as sofar, I haven't been presented the option in the -app-. Never have had any issues installing post download and upload.

I also had to engage my parking brake. Not sure if that changed over the versions ( I was on 11/2021.50) and in order to upgrade, it made me put the parking brake on. Kind of makes sense though for safety reasons.

Was told by a national Genius that I would be notified when my location, or I, was selected for an update or something to that effect. Had a successful transfer and install from my BMW app from the phone. Car is garaged on a level concrete surface. Good battery, etc.

Nothing.........

Just another case of BMW FUBAR.

So I have updated my software at least 5 times since ownership with no issues. Today all goes well for the latest version, 11.2023.50, but when finished the front drivers screen shows all doors open? I tried rebooting the iDrive system but it’s still there. I read an old post that said this should go away so I will recheck it in the morning. Everything else works normally and the BMW app shows the vehicle locked.

Tried to install 2023/11.50 today on my 45e after getting an alert on my phone that it was available. About 20 minutes later, I got a critical error telling me to call roadside assistance. Long story short, the update failed and the car had to be towed to the dealer tomorrow.

Just heard back from the dealer. Apparently my KAFAS (windshield camera) module failed during the update. According to them, new windshields mess with it causing it to fail updates or fail immediately. I had a new windshield put in by the dealer in Janurary.
