Car horn kept honking after I turned the car on and walked away from it

I usually do remote start to warm up my car as its starting to get cold here in Canada. But today I turned the car on by pressing the start button because I was low on gas. I walked into my house with the fob key and my phone and as I entered my house the vehicle horn honked once and then as I was walking further into the house it honked again. It did this randomly a few times, I got annoyed by the constant honking every few seconds so I went back and turned the car off. I wasn't aware of the horn sound when exiting the vehicle if its on. Is this normal, is there a way to stop it?

Should be mentioned in the owners manual (BTW, there’s an owners manual built into iDrive which has a keyword search).

Plus there are threads about it and how you may be able to get around this safety warning by special placement of the remote.

Yes, it's normal (for BMW) and it makes sense - you will not forget and leave your car running. I don't think that there is a way to stop as it's considered safety feature.

If you want to lock your car with the engine running and you DON'T want the horn to honk...try this tip below. Report back if it works or not.

...place the fob against the windshield right above where the VIN plate is located...then lock the vehicle...see if this prevents the horn from honking...

My guess is that while walking in the house, you were getting in range of the remote to the X5, then went back out of range...each time that occurred, it would trigger the beep.
