Does it happen? Sure. Enough to say it’s common? No.

I know 3 people with pre 2020 40i's and if 2 of them had oil pump failures its either really unlucky or more common then thought.Definitely not common, there are a few circumstances on the internet that have everyone all freaked out.

OMEGA412 wroteI have two pre 2020 40i’s in my garage, one with over 110k miles and the other at 50k. Neither have an issue. I spent a ton of time researching this and have come to the conclusion that there just doesn’t seem to be much data out there about cars experiencing the issue. My moms 740i and my buddies x3 40i both had oil pump failure under 50k miles. Not saying it doesn’t happen but I wouldn’t scare anyone off over it. Then again, plenty of people get all worked up over it. Guess it depends on which camp you’re in. 2 out of 3 is pretty unlucky though.
Not a cheap repair to replace the pump but that is the best solution on a 2019 before damage happens.
I imported my BMW X5 G05 40i from Canada. During the first 3 days of driving I had no problems with the oil measurement test. After I changed the oil, the test started stopping at around 20%.
I located the oil pressure sensor and replaced it with a manual pressure gauge. The pressure looks normal — around 2.3 bar at idle, and the needle is stable with no bouncing or sudden movement. At around 6000 RPM under throttle I get about 6.7 bar.
Now the interesting part: my lithium-ion battery failed at the same time the oil test started failing, and I am currently waiting for a replacement.
When I check ISTA live data, the oil pressure shows between 2.3 and 2.9 bar, but it jumps very quickly (for example from 2.3 to 2.9 to 2.6 and back to 2.3 within a second). The values stay in that range but fluctuate a lot.
I will wait for the new battery and update once it is installed, but my question is: are these “bouncy” readings normal? Do I really need to replace the oil pump, or is there something else I should check before doing that?
Any advice would be appreciated.
