For US deliveries from Spartanburg, what does “at the port” mean?

I assume it’s probably the rail yard near the factory as the car will be shipped via rail to the Pacific Northwest. But I’ve also heard some refer to the rail terminal in Renton WA as the port (and it probably is besides being a rail yard and shipping there probably avoids certain taxes).

These are the things that make you go “hmmm” when you are waiting for your car to be delivered.

The railyard in KC is also a port and it goes to that status while switching trains.

So could the car already be on a train and I may see “at the port” when it’s in KC or Renton?

I thinking I read the our CA can tell us the car number.

It is likely in KC depending on how long it has been.

It hasn’t been long enough, but that is the next status. I just wasn’t clear what it meant. Any idea how long it takes them to go from the factory to being loaded on the train?

They load onto train cars at the factory. I assume they go straight into the cars rather than waiting in the lot for a period of time and then the train cars are picked up regularly. That may not be the case though given how many are produced.

My dealer just texted a picture of his page that says Released to Carrier 8/15/22 and then Delivered from VPC 8/18/2022. He says that means he should see it today. Genius says it got picked up today at VPC and should be about 6 days to the dealer…🥴
Any thoughts or experiences?

It looks like they added covered parking for all those new cars! Good news for those whose cars are sitting waiting to get on a train.

It’s fun to see how they are assembled (haven’t seen the BMW plant but did have an extensive tour of the Ford Rouge plant), but it would be really interesting to learn more about their logistics and scheduling.

I don't know if you have seen this already but here is some of the X5 assembly line.

Thankyou TB, I did see that :cool!:

It’s a an expanded experience to see it in real life and watch the different elements blend together.

Wanted to do the factory pickup, but wife is recovering from back surgery so the 2,500 mile trip was not possible - THIS TIME! :D

Hope she is feeling better soon.

Surprised to see so many people!

A previous forum rumor was that the factory had only robots, one man and one dog.

The man's job was to feed the dog.

The dog's job was to bite the man if he tried to touch the robots.

Sorry to hear…for both of you and spouses! That would have been a great experience! Got to see ours after it came off the truck today but will have to wait for dealer prep first☹️

Thanks Nordring, it’s been slow but much much improved. Probably waited too long but who wants to rush back surgery.

Hoping yours goes as well as hers.

I'm in Los Angeles. For me, AT THE PORT meant Kansas City, like others have said. I had verified with the Genius, and my tracker status went to IN TRANSIT the same day. That was Friday, Aug19. Genius said expected to arrive in San Bernardino Aug26. It's my birthday on Aug28 so I'd be super happy to take delivery that week. Good luck to everyone having surgery.

I'm AT THE PORT again. Finally. Genius said it was released to a transport company today and should be at the dealer Sep10. It's now been over 3 months since I placed my order...

In many BMW delivery updates, “at the port” usually refers to the stage where the vehicle has reached a major logistics hub before final regional distribution. For West Coast deliveries it can mean a rail terminal or processing facility near the destination. People coordinating pickups sometimes also look at services like Seattle Black Limo Service for convenient transportation once the vehicle finally arrives.
