Can't believe the 2024 key fob has the buttons on the edge, same as my wifes Mazda and is a pain to use.

I like the old design better. numerous people have commented on my keyfob as striking. This looks more generic

Black high gloss on key fobs is the worst idea ever. Either the designer skipped any consumer test or the sourcing manager found the high gloss plastic cheaper and could save 2 cents per fob…

Agree. I don't like the looks of the new keyfob.

I think the previous two generations were metal (F15 and g05) on the front and plastic on the back. They are definitely heavy and feel like it’s quality. Idk what BMW is doing nowadays. This can’t all be because of the shortages

the new fob side-buttons design won’t be good for my use case. I carry the current (slimmer) fob in my pant’s front coin pocket which provides easy access to all the buttons by simply pressing on top of the fabric

It’s 100% cost cutting under the guise of modern design and cutting edge technology. Same as sacrificing dash buttons for touchscreens for everyday functions.

Are the 2023 and 2024 keys not significantly different such that a key fob case compatible with pre-LCI fobs will fit well with the new cases? I have a 2024 X5MC and the keys are so easy to scuff...

I have seriously thought about putting a ceramic coat on them :). Has anyone here done such a thing?

I just stop carry my key fob anymore ... so it won't get scratched.

Phone as main key + key card as back up in wallet

I'm almost there as well - it's worked perfectly well with my Tesla.

I've had some wonkiness with the BMW app not being quite so reliable as the Tesla one vis-a-vis automatic unlock, at least in the first few weeks of ownership, which is why I feel a bit more comfortable keeping the key fob with me until I am more comfortable.

The bmw app (thru intenet, especially its server) is indeed buggy, but rest assured that the key function is actually implemented thru Apple wallet’s framework, it is not dependent on the app or internet. I don’t recall seeing much complaint on the feature on reliability front yet.

The key card is also a great backup, in the worst case your phone does not work, you can unlock and drive the car using the keycard alone. You do need to activate it before use once.

In my case even a dealer software update 8-8.5 did not wipe pairing of phone or keycard pairing.

I think they'd expect majority of people will just use digital key over time so not invest into physical keys any more. Won't be surprised they will discontinue including physical key with cars some time in the future just as what Tesla is doing.

What's more bean counting is if you see key for car without m-sport package... it does not even give you glossed plastic and it looks much cheaper than this

Get a Faraday Key FOB pouch to prevent someone from scanning your fob. With that scan they can program their own key fob with your information and steal your car.

https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Blocking-Double-Layers-Shielding-Anti-Theft/dp/B0B4DNQZ34/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=faraday%2Bkey%2Bfob&qid=1693142029&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

We were in Canada (Toronto and Montreal) recently, car thefts at hotels every night, massive problem there and you can google it. I used my Faraday pouch immediatly after locking the car, put a club on the steering wheel and our '23 X5 was not stolen or damaged. Of course the X5 has GPS tracking and motion sensors in and out. For example a Lexus RX350 was stolen parked right next to mine on one night. As I said there was a car theft every single night we were there. Car's are driven to the Port of Montreal, put in containers and shipped to the Middle East and Africa where they are sold for 3 times the going price.

Thank you so much! I was able to pick up #1 and #2 (local dealer matched online prices) and they fit great. The opening through which the key fob is inserted are on opposite sides between the two covers, such that the leather one permits the use of a key ring whereas the M version blocks it.

As an aside, I had some graphene coating I sometimes use on a car and I tried it on the key fobs; the tiny microscratches disappeared and the key looked amazing. Slippery, granted, but it's going in a key fob cover so that's OK.
