Just changed the transfer case fluid recently and the former shudder went away almost immediately. I was able to use ISTA to open the case and pull out all the dirty fluid. Replaced with clean fluid and performed a calibration/adaptation.

This is an easier job than people make it out to be.

I used this fluid extractor with the included small flexible hose:

Name on Amazon: Thorstone 200cc Automotive Fluid Extractor Pump, Manual Oil Change Syringe with 50cm Rubber Hose & 2pcs 22cm PVC Suction Tubes

No need to remove the brace entirely, just remove the e10 bolts. Then you can use a 6 inch extension to access the fill hole behind the brace.

With the extractor, new plug, and fluid this is a sub $75 - 1.5 hour job.

If you haven't changed your transfer case fluid yet, do it now.

Just had the transfer case oil changed due to the shuddering problem while turning at low speeds. Cost $600+ at BMW, no coverage under warranty as others have said. Have driven for ~200 miles since, and I don’t feel the shuddering any more. Hoping it’s resolved. I do have extended warranty, but I’d rather avoid the ordeal of getting the TC changed.

It took a a few weeks for the clutches to get the fluid worked through but not a bit of trouble 8k later.

How do you mean for the clutches to get the fluid worked through? Did you still feel some shuddering or noises until it all lubed up? I ask because I had mine replaced and after I feel like it was much worse and making a grinding sound which it never did before.

Clutches are saturated with the transfer case oil that was there before the change. It takes time/miles for the new fluid to saturate them to start exhibiting the desired behavior. Here is the quote from the BMW SIB 27 02 20
The transfer case’s newly replaced oil still needs a minimum drive time before it is fully saturated into the clutch plates inside the transfer case; a minimum of 125 miles of normal driving is required for this to occur.
The shuddering should diminish during this run-in period before completely smoothing out.
There shouldn't be any grinding and it definitely wasn't worse after I changed the oil. Maybe the oil change was messed up and not enough oil or wrong oil was added, you will need to talk to the shop. I wouldn't drive it and hope for the best. You can try disabling the transfer case through ISTA to confirm if noise is from transfer case.

Let me rephrase, I just had the transfer case replaced, not the oil... He tried telling me it was just the clutches engaging, which I know is bs. So they're getting another transfer case from bmw and replacing it again... Hopefully this fixes it once and for all.

My problem has been returned. 10/2023 with 44k miles, 7 months out of warranty, and BMW replaced the oil (they paid 95% as goodwill). 10/2024 with 53k miles on the car I complained the issue was back but they claimed they could not duplicate it. Now 11/2025 with 59k miles it continues to have the issue and is going in for service. I am sure they will be able to duplicate the issue. What I don't know is whether any goodwill will be provided. I have an extended third party warranty that would cover it, but honestly BMW should be paying for this.

Was the problem reported while under warranty? Escalate your case until you get to regional BMW service reps.

Mine is a 2019 so it is well out of warranty. That said, even 7 months out of warranty they changed the transfer case oil nearly for free (I paid $25) which ultimately did not fix the problem.

I would say get one from a junk yard or eBay with low miles and change the fluid. It looks like a good DIY project fora shade tree mechanic. Not sure what a shop would charge to do the swap if you brought your own part.

Update on transfer case fluid change The stutter seems to have gone away. Hopefully it's not a band aid fix, only time will tell.
Which BMW did you go to in NJ? And is the TC still good? I know it’s an old thread 😅

This kinda sounds like the dreaded Audi Quattro "rumble". The fix for that, absent a new transfer case, was to change the transfer case oil at about 40K miles, before the rumble starts

Mine had that problem lat year during winter. At first thought it was leapfroging due to cold tires, untill one day heard and felt clunk. Went to a dealer they confirmed and changed the fluid, problem was gone since then. Mine is 2022 m50i.

My 2024 X5 50e developed a shuttering at low speeds at around 44k miles. My dealer replaced the transfer case fluid first and asked me to drive it 1,000 miles. The new fluid seemed to alleviate the issue initially, but the shuttering returned. I brought the car back to my dealer and they replaced the transfer case at 45k miles.

Also, my 2019 X5 40i had similar issues at 75k miles but I ended up trading it in before addressing it with the dealer since it was out of warranty.
