I'm still processing. Will comment more later....
JMcLellan wroteOnly saw the ESPN version of this but sounds like the Mavs were done trying to get Luka to stay in shape and were not going to give him a monster contract next year. Conditioning concerns and the injuries that go with them. What?? I wonder what went into the thought process for the Mavs on this.
lakefront wroteYeah but he is so fricken good. I'm usually not a fan of teams letting their best players leave but maybe time will show us all the Mavs made the right move. I didn't think about his injury history. He always seems to have a bad knee or something.Only saw the ESPN version of this but sounds like the Mavs were done trying to get Luka to stay in shape and were not going to give him a monster contract next year. JMcLellan wroteYeah, but he's only 25.....is this something that's gonna get better or worse? Quite a decision by the Mavs.Yeah but he is so fricken good. TXSTYLE wroteI’m still in disbelief Marcus! What is going on??THIS is the most seismic trade in NBA HISTORY!!!!!

JMcLellan wroteAD is just as injury prone, if not more. Other teams weren't offering more for Luka...it is strange.Yeah but he is so fricken good. mjj wroteI didnt know people still watched the NBA.

Josh-PA wroteI'm also a fan and regularly attend home games for the last 20yrs.This trade makes the other GM in your city look like a genius for hiring shotenheimer as a coach. Let's keep the flat earther and trade away the fatty who carried your cream to the finals last year. I'm a Luka fan.
M3WC wroteother teams didnt offer more because the Mavs GM didnt approach anyone else. They went to the Lakers, took basically the 1st thing they offered, and pulled the trigger. A 25yo, top player in the league coming off a season where he dragged the team to the finals, and then averaged 35ppg in the finals, should have gotten a haul, but the Mavs got pennies on the dollar.AD is just as injury prone, if not more. Other teams weren't offering more for Luka...it is strange.
This is a great move for Lakers for the future, a young player to build around. This does nothing for them this season. Lebron and his son need to leave LA, that experiment is embarrassing. Apparently he had no idea about Luka trade. Hopefully this is a sign Lakers are in planning stages of Lebron exit or retirement. LA will forever be Kobe's city. Trade Lebron while his old ass still has some value.
TXSTYLE wroteThis trade only makes sense if you get AD + the ability to retool in the future. De'Aron fox fetched a better haul, Rudy Goebert fetched a better haul, Mikael Bridges fetched a better haul. You really think the best the Mavs could do was an aging superstar with a checkered injury past, a first in 4 years, and a bench player averaging 25minutes a game and under 10ppg on a team void of talent. Not to mention they also gave up a current 2nd in the deal.Well... I've had some time to process, evaluate and listen to Mavs organization, media, etc.
Here's my take:
Initialy I was like, WITAF??? 😳🤯🤬
But then I began to realize that Nico Harrison (GM and head of Operations) has been a mastermind for this Team and he also was a former Executive with NIKE for years. He is very well connected and respected throughout the NBA and especially by players.
After reflecting on the last 7 years that Luka Doncic was here, nobody knows him better, strengths and weaknesses, then Nico who made the trade to bring Luka to Dallas. That being said, they obviously have seen enough to make this incredible decision! Luka is a Offensive Juggernaut and will be for at least another decade if he can stay healthy. He has ALWAYS had issues with and struggles to be in shape. He has suffered a plethora of soft tissue injuries which are directly related to his poor physical conditioning. And his DEFENSE is non existent! This has shown time and again when it matters most.
He is/was eligible for a "Super Max" Contract that would pay him $365 Million this Off Season. That is a shit ton of money to pay ANYONE who you've known and know what to expect from. Clearly this was a business decision for the now and future.
Now let's discuss Anthony Davis and what he brings and why Dallas Mavericks did not even entertain any other offers:
AD is not only a epic All NBA Defensive player, but his offense and scoring ability is way up there too. He is an elite player and instantly improves our Defense which is a must to Win a Championship.
There is a instant connection between AD, Coach Kidd, who coached AD when he won a Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. He will plug & Play in Dallas who is trying to Win Now.
Also, Nico is not done bringing in more pieces. The MAVS will be in the MIX and TIP 3 Teams in the West for the foreseeable future.
The Lakers now have their heir apparent once LeBron retires.
FYI... There has Never been a trade of this magnitude for 2 All NBA Players.
Also... The NBA ratings have struggled big time this season. The Commissioner is open to ANY and All suggestions to improve viewership. Keep that 8n mind too.
TheWatchGuy wroteIf in fact DALLAS manages to actually WIN another Championship or two in the next 4yrs, this trade makes perfect sense. TXSTYLE wrotei dont know if even 1-2 championships in the short term makes this a good trade. They were close last year with Luka dragging the team to the finals on a bum knee.If in fact DALLAS manages to actually WIN another Championship or two in the next 4yrs, this trade makes perfect sense. If not, then fail.
Also... Nico is NOT done retooling this Team this Season. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. For now...

Unfortunately we will never know if Luka could have brought another championship to Dallas! However, it would have been worth it to keep him and see what the Mavs could have built around him to bring the next championship!
