For a sub-$100k car that is carrying the S68 weight up front I wish BMW would've offered the M Competition brakes as an option (not the M Sport). What began as a desire after seeing Ninefourteener's user avatarNinefourteener detailed thread turned into reality this past weekend.

Parts list
  1. X5M brake calipers front in red: 34-10-9-504-107, 34-10-9-504-108
  2. X5M rotor splash shield (save some money and just cut yours instead): 34-10-8-074-294, 34-10-8-074-295
  3. X5M rotors front (SHW substitute): BFL43501, BFR43502
  4. EBC Red Stuff front brake pads: DP32331C
  5. X5M brake calipers rear: 34-20-6-898-601, 34-20-6-898-602
  6. X5M brake caliper bracket: 34-20-9-504-115, 34-20-9-504-116
  7. X5M brake pad clips: 34-20-6-881-294
  8. X5M rotors rear (SHW substitute): BRL43507, BRR43508
  9. EBC Red Stuff rear brake pads: DP32320C
  10. Goodridge brake lines: SBW1211-4C
  11. Castrol SRF

Installation

Overall pretty straight forward. Similar to Ninefourteener's experience it's worth disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery so that you avoid any CELs with the ABS system; once I completed the installation I needed to recalibrate the parking brakes before the CELs would clear.

One thing to note, the M-car wheel hub is a different part number and you will not be able to bolt down the rotor to the hub if you don't change this. I elected not to change the hub for now, and instead opted for an alignment bolt to help with ensuring the holes line up.

Overall Impressions

I knew if I just upgraded the pads and added some stainless steel lines I'd get some additional stopping power, but that wasn't the point of this upgrade...there's just something about the 6-pot calipers and drilled rotors that sets the car apart, and I couldn't bear dealing with the fomo.

I did a side by side comparison on the front rotors, M-Sport vs M-Competition, and learned they're both 395x36mm. I've previously seen others mention the M-Sport rotors are 374mm and was pleasantly surprised. The rear rotors are larger than the M-Sport.

Is this an option to do on the M50i's as well, does anyone know?

Does anyone know which 20" BMW wheel that is in the video?

Thank your for the write up. Would you mind sharing a cost estimate for the parts? Thanks!

I bought everything new, and likely spent around $6-6.5k. I sourced parts from BMW Northwest, GetBMWParts and eBay.

Surely you can source a used set of calipers to save a few bucks.

Love your write up and including the part numbers. Wish I could had gone brand new. I saved a lot with refurbished BBK from Tony (searchable).

Almost impossible to find used M50 or X5M brakes with the brackets included.
Without the brackets, the used M50 or X5M calipers won’t fit.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering if F95 REAR calipers bolt up without any issue, and you were able to confirm that.

Done any 60-0 stops with a draggy. Curious what distance you’re getting.

Haven't done anything of that nature, that wasn't the goal with the change, it's purely aesthetics for me.

Do you have a draggy? Make some. Curious how they stack up with factory brakes.

And for looks only you could have just gotten some drilled rotors for the factory M sport brakes
