Hi all,

I’m looking for recommendations on hitch-mounted bike racks that work well with the 2025 BMW X5 50e MSPORT/PRO. I’ve used Thule roof racks on previous vehicles but am hoping to switch to a hitch rack this time around—for easier loading and better aerodynamics.

Ideally looking for something that can hold 2–3 bikes securely. Would love to hear what’s worked for others—any specific models you recommend, what to avoid, compatibility tips with the X5 50e (especially with the rear sensors and clearance), and any lessons learned along the way.

Appreciate the advice!

Thanks,
FCP

There are several threads where people discuss rack options, but I'll give you my $.02.

I've got a Kuat Sherpa. Kuat makes great racks. The Sherpa is a 2 bike only rack. Several of their other models do have an option to add a 3rd bike. No issues with clearance. They have a tilt feature to allow opening the tailgate without removing the bikes. One thing I really like is their receiver mount has a simple wedge lock to eliminate wobble, and it only takes a couple turns of a knob with no tools. Some racks need wrenches to install and remove.

When you're driving, you need to enable trailer mode (I'm assuming you have factory hitch). The rack and bikes will block the parking sensors and the blind spot radars. Enabling trailer mode will avoid continuous beeping when backing (backup camera still works though you're looking through the bikes) and will adjust the driver assistance stuff to deal with the sensors being blocked (read the manual.)

If you do find a rack with trailer-like taillights, plugging them in will automatically enable trailer mode.

Great advice on the trailer mode!

I have been using a 1Up 2 bike hitch rack and it’s been great, super easy to use and solid/secure.

One piece of advice for any hitch rack you may want to consider a hitch swing mount as well as you cannot open the trunk opening my case scratch the rear tailgate with bikes on.

1up or kuat. They are the best. I personally have a 1up

I have a 1up but slightly annoyed with the ratcheting release lever. They have a newer lever option, definitely worth it imo.

I use a Rocky Mounts Monorail, I carry fat tired bikes a lot. It's been on and off through salty Wisconsin winters, and is finally showing it's age after 6 years. I like the lever to pull to tilt the rack down it works well.
