My lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring kept shutting off whenever I would go over the lane markers so I took my 2019 X5 into the dealer. They said the vibration generator in the steering wheel has gone bad and want $1162 to replace it. I can find the part for about $120 and there are plenty of videos showing how to get to it in the steering wheel since so many people replace their stock steering wheels. However, the estimate included a $565 charge to recalibrate the lane keep assist camera. When I asked about this they said when you replace a component of the system you have to recalibrate it to let it know a part was replaced. Is this BS? I have Bimmerconnect and can see the vibration motor fault and clear it; it comes back since the motor isn't working but would it come back if it was working? Has anyone ever done this replacement? Thank you!

Have you resolved this issue? I encountered a similar problem with my vibration generator, but I managed to fix it by disassembling the steering wheel and addressing a faulty connection in the internal wiring.

I can’t see any reason why the camera over the windscreen would need recalibrating when it’s a ‘dumb’ non-adjustable or tweakable part you’re replacing. It isn’t anywhere near it and I’d guess the vibe gen has no feedback into the system.
Maybe a fault code would need clearing, but recalibration can’t surely be necessary?

the recalibration charge for the camera is just another bs (fake) charge they are trying to get from you! 100%

Recalibration is only necessary when the camera has been moved from its initial place - like in a windshield replacement situation.
Even in that situation, the recalibration fee does should NOT exceed $200.
Long story short, anything replaced in the steering wheel should not involve recalibration of the camera on the windshield. Hope this helps

Any update on what you ended up doing?

How can we just code all and any steering wheel vibration off. That would be great. Do we ask someone to create this coding?

Well I can give confirmation that the camera doesn’t need recal if you’re just changing the vibration generator. Replaced it on mine and no issues, I did unplug both batteries.
