Just took delivery of my new 2026 xDrive 40i X5 about 6 weeks ago. I want this vehicle to last. As such, I do not plan on waiting 1 year or 10K miles before 1st oil change. Will I have any issues such as voiding of the BMW basic new vehicle or extended warranties by using anything other than “genuine” BMW oil filters?

Just use OEM or OE supplier oil filter. They are good quality and not expansive. Just avoid unknown quality random filter.

That was my plan to use OE/OEM. To be clear, to your knowledge, it won’t pose a warranty problem to use a filter that is not “genuine BMW”? If you don’t know or are not sure, that’s ok too.

Maybe, hows that?

I appreciate your candor.

I’ve been using BMW, Mann and Mahle oil and air filters for years.

If your truly worried about the dealer then just use BMW filters.

I would stay on the safe side and use genuine filters during the warranty period. Just in case something happens and they use the excuse that a non approved part caused the issue and deny warranty.

I appreciate the logic in that. Thank you all for weighing in. Anyone care to suggest an online source of Genuine BMW filters that are discounted relative to dealer retail?

Use Google and type BMW space part number and buy from the least expensive provider. May want to order air filters and cabin filters at the same time to get free shipping.

Thank you. I ended up ordering filters from https://www.getbmwparts.com/ for $17.20 each and oil drain plug gaskets at $1.95 per. Great idea about ordering the engine and cabin air filters at the same time to save on shipping. Sigh! Hopefully I’ll remember to order the whole lot next time.

I personally replaced the oil and oil filter for my 2025 X5 xDrive at 600 miles, and noticed a lot of metal specks in the oil. I think it was the right decision. Also, the front diff fluid was already very dark at 9K miles - replaced it and rear diff fluid as well.

if you can afford a 2026 X5, you can afford a BMW oil filter
