Hey guys, I googled this a bit and although there are plenty of Apple Carplay issues across the board, I have not found this one exactly.

When activating a route in Apple Maps, the turn by turn instructions displayed in HUD almost always freezes at some point. Meaning they do not update or "recalculating route" just sticks there. The rest of HUD is working fine for the true iDrive display like cruise, mph etc. It does this with both my phone and my GF's who is the main driver. The main iD7 display continues to work fine, updating etc. and showing the route and turns. I will bring it in to the dealer, but I kind of feel like this is going to be one of those things I will be chasing cats on. The car is running the latest OTA software and the phone are running iOS 26.

Anyone else have this problem?

no issues (just used Apple Maps this morning)

MY21 45e
iPhone 17 Pro
iOS 26.2
iDrive 11/2023.50

I’ve also observed this on my MY19 X5 with iOS 26. I ended up just restarting iDrive by holding the power button and that fixes it for that drive. I haven’t tried yet to see if this issue still persists on iOS 26.2

Thanks, I should have noted I also have tried resetting iDrive by holding down the button. It is a temporary fix for me and then just freezes again.

I just ran across this same issue on my X5 a few days ago. I'm on iDrive7 and iOS 26.2. This happened on the worst possible day since I had to take a 12 mile detour from the highway due to a major accident and the HUD was a huge help, up until the point where it froze and then it just became a major issue since all I saw was a turn that passed 3 miles back. The screen showed the correct turns but driving down a completely dark twisty road, somewhere I've never been, during a rain storm, without the HUD working properly was a pain in the ass. I couldn't restart it while driving because I didn't want to get lost and I was already running 2.5 hours late from what this trip should have taken.

follow-up question:

when y'all experienced the 'freezing' and some even rebooted iDrive with temporary resolution, did you switch to a different navigation method (e.g. native iDrive, Google Maps, Waze)?

Exactly what I’m experiencing. It totally sucks, especially when you are used to turn by turn Apple Map instructions in HUD. I also have a G30 with ID6 which doesn’t do Apple Maps in HUD, so I can’t really test it on that.

It’s good to know I’m not alone and that the issue is more of a bug vs. a HUD unit replacement, but I’ve kind of dismissed that given the symptoms. I will take it to the dealer if it persists and an update doesn’t fix it. My CPO is up in February, so before then for sure. I’m sure they will reflash the whole car, which is a PIA losing all settings.

Only Apple MAPs displays turn by turn in HUD, all the others its main screen only.

My girlfriend is running the latest 26.2, I’m running 26.3 beta, does it on both.

not true: Google Maps also shows turn by turn directions in HUD for iPhone/Apple CarPlay users. started earlier this year in July. both our vehicles at the time were iDrive 7, now just mine while wife’s new car is iDrive 8.5 07/2025.51 and it displays in the HUD, too

I wasn't able to switch due to the twisty road I was driving coupled with rain and the road being completely dark, so I couldn't take my eyes off the road or even pull over to try this. I did use voice control to turn HUD on and off, thinking that may fix it but it did not. This is probably the one time where the HUD was really needed and was quite disappointed when it failed.

My CPO is up in February as well but I have an awesome service advisor that told me to bring it in and they'll go over everything for me before it expires. I'll mention this to him just in case he's heard any one else complain and maybe a software update will fix it. I For the time being, i may use BMW navi if I get stuck in a tough situation and see how that performs instead of Apple carplay.

Thanks, I did not realize they recently added this. I will be sure to test it out in Google Maps to see if it still freezes/stops.

I tried that too, but it just went off and back on to the same freeze. The only way to get it back working is to reboot the main screen by holding in the button or by disconnecting the phone from Apple Carplay which can be done a number of ways. The best way is to reboot iDrive because it comes right back in Carplay with the Map/Route still engaged.

Same here on the SA. Been going to the same SA and dealer for 25 years. She takes care of me big time, especially on the third party warranties I have like Wheel and Tire Insurance. I have not had to pay for one tire in 7 years. Somehow she gets me two when one bubbles and then somehow the other axle bubbles, wink wink.

The reboot is what i would normally do but being on an unknown road that evening and trying not to delay getting home even further, I just ended up turning HUD off and just using the screen for the directions.

Understood. I was in a similar position last week in a city I was not familiar with taking left and rights and I could not take the liberty to reboot, but when I hit the highway that I was to stay on for 30 miles, I could afford the 60 second reboot.

It's always great to have someone you can trust in the service department. My SA takes care of me and I work in a field where I am able to take care of certain issues that he runs into, and it works out for both of us.

A nice $250 bottle of her favorite red wine for Christmas also helps! That's half the price of one tire on my M550!

Same issue for me. HUD freezes with Apple Maps navigation. Mine usually freezes on a particular step of the route guidance like "Left turn at 'road'" or similar.

Iphone 16 Pro. IOS 26.2 and 26.3. 2023 X5 M50i running 07/2024.30.

Thanks for the confirmation. Has to be an iOS26 Apple CarPlay bug.

Add me to the list on freezing hud. Stuck on calculating. Resetting I drive is only temporary and another day it will freeze again. Quick way is to cancel the route and navigate from the most recents.

The freezing HUD directions doesn’t happen all the time.

I thought it was the new Widgets I added, after removing them, still freezes.
