I was fed up with the stupid BMW envelope cargo net draped right across the split level tailgate so decided to create my own cubbies on either side by drilling a few 5mm holes and looping some bungee cord through to create two new small cubbies. Only took 20 mins or so but definitely better than the trawler fishing net that was there previously.

I almost did the same thing, but I wasn't sure how well I'd like it. Instead, I went for the less permanent option with some short bungees with hooks that were pretty close to the size of the edge of the covers.

I just stretched two or three across the cover and snapped it back into place. They are snug enough to mostly stay put with use, but just movable enough to slide the hooks up or down if you need to accommodate an oddly-shaped item.

As a bonus, I use some of the extras from the combo pack to strap our travel blanket to the tether points on the rear seatback.

Nice work on the install. That looks pretty clean.

I bought (online) 2” wide elastic straps with Velcro on each end. Removed the cubby shell and wrapped the strap, fastened to itself in the back.
