I am currently driving a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature. I chose this over a BMW X3 that had a better drivetrain and handling for a better interior and saving $15k+. The X3 was not that much better than the CX-5.

This time I wanted at least a six cylinder and a little larger vehicle. I was surprised how few choices there are with that criteria. Manufacturers are going with four cylinders even in larger vehicles.

I tested a Mazda CX-70 and it was nice since I am a Mazda guy anyways. It is a little too large for my needs. It handles well for a mechanical suspension, though it really needs an adaptive one. Did not like alcantara on the seats on the highest trim. Thought I could buy this and be reasonably happy.

Next I tested the Mercedes GLE450. Felt like I was in an isolation tank. No sound, no steering feedback, just floats down the road. If you want a pure luxury drive, this is the vehicle for you. I am not ready yet, maybe when I retire?

Then I drove the X5, wow what a difference. I get it now. Fell in love with the engine and how it handles, it just feels and sounds right. Do not like not having real buttons for HVAC and not being able to permanently disable the auto start/ stop function, but there are always compromises with any vehicle. Then there is the price of admission, ouch.

My biggest concern is reliability and maintenance. I clean my vehicle each week, even the engine bay, and have all the maintenance done on schedule. Hope I did not make a big mistake and just get another CX-5, but I ordered the X5:

2026 X5 xDrive40i
Manhattan green
Tartufo merino leather
Brown high gloss wood
Premium package
Driving assist package
Parking package
Climate comfort package
Space saver spare
Will add Msport adaptive software through connected services.

Why did you choose a X5 and your options?

Great subject,

I use to buy Lexus RX with their 3.5 V6. the vehicle was quieter than its toyota sibling. However I was changing vehicles often, there was just something missing. Power from the 3.5 is ok, transmission was ok, comfort was ok but seats hard. Then came the new redesign models and Lexus embraced the green new scam and went on the 4 cylinder train with a Turbo. In my opinion those vehicles are too heavy and these engines are overworked. It was clear at that point that my departure from Lexus was up after 4 vehicles, 2 for my use.

My focus has always been on reliability and it meant that most, if not all, Luxury brands were eliminated, including BMW. I always felt bad for those who bought BMW with their non stop leaks and expensive mechanical problems. I worked with guys that were just burnt financially by their BMW.

But in the corner of my eyes I was seing that the X5 was making the top of the list on Consumer reports suddenly. I then decided my slow process of research, looking at YT videos, owner's review, crash test results. I took one for a test drive and it was a 2020 I think but did not buy at the time, the negotiation was not in my favour and my better half discouraged me to change my car again. (took me a while to say to myself who is she to control my car saga lol).

After my research I found that the 2022 was the one to buy, and I bought a CPO with 32,000 Km in Montreal, it was 1.5 years old and loaded like I wanted it. The B58 engine and the ZF transmission are a match made in car heaven. I loved the ride, the self-ish advance driving, heated armrest, premium seats etc... 2 years later I have no regrets. The only thing I miss about Lexus is the absolute fabulous service. All the BMW repairs I had done, all minor, I had to go back 1-3 times for them to redo properly.

Sterling13, I think you have a really beautiful and fun to drive SUV on it's way.
Between my wife and I, we've owned 3 BMWs and we tracked our daily drivers at many BMW High Performance Driving Events.
Start a family and get a Toyota 4 runner V8 loaded that we needed and enjoyed for 16 years.
Had some sports sedans and eventually just felt a sporty SUV was best for our needs and some fun driving.
Picked up a Ford Explorer ST and I often joked it was an SUV that thought it was a sports car...sport mode was fun and it had multiple other driving modes.
But I felt the quality just wasn't there. Cheap plastic clips that broke around the seat controls. Not a warranty item and about $150 to replace
Rust started on the roof rails at about 3 years old...not a warranty repair. Then, shortly after that, during an oil change the mechanic says I have a little transfer case leak. Now I'm over it.
We always wanted to get back into a BMW and the X5M60i just ticked all the boxes for me. I couldn't afford or justify the price of the X5MC
But I wanted the S68 engine and the M sport professional suspension so it's very sporty. Have to say that right now it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. I feel special getting in it...sometimes, at night, I go look at it in the garage:lol:

Congrats on your order/purchase! Our next door neighbor has a Mazda CX 5, great cars, but they stare at our X5 whenever we pull it out haha. These two cars aren't really in the same league in my opinion. We came from a 2010 Honda Accord EX with about 100k on the ODO. It was BASIC. No nav, knobs that didn't work, an AM/FM radio with barely 3 stations that work, little 4 cylinder engine, peeling, drive side roof would leak water whenever it rained, and it was our daily...I can go on but you get the picture.

Massive upgrade to an X5 M60i, Marina Bay Blue over Tartufo, custom ordered and every single option was checked (except tow hitch). It was either this or a Kia Telluride. I don't know, our car comparison makes no sense. We knew nothing about BMWs, only that they're a high end brand and something we've never had before. Mercedes felt too old for us, and Audi just doesn't look as good (imo). So yeah, here we are. Went balls out on this purchase and haven't looked back. Amazing car that doesn't drive like an SUV at all but the ground clearance does remind you you're in a bigger vehicle.

Congrats! (quoting one of my favorite movies). "You have Chosen, wisely."

The CX is a great suv but it isn't in the same league! Let the waiting begin! Have fun and congrats on a great build!:happyanim:

My X5 is currently scheduled to go into assembly this week, Friday the 13th. Hope the workers are focused on the job and not the weekend, lol. Snow is finally starting to melt, just need some rain to wash the salt off the roads before delivery.

I may be the outlier here, but a lot of really good things have happened to me on Friday the 13th...
I had my Veterinary School Interview and was accepted on my 1st application
Graduated from Veterinary School on Friday the 13th
It is funny though, many of my clients will reschedule surgery or procedures when they realize it's Friday the 13th...

I was born on the 13th and not suspicious about anything, so not a big deal to me. Just hope the workers are focused on the job and not the weekend, lol

I chose the 2023 Pre-LCI...liked the style and everything else in it..not looking back.

I chose the X5M because it’s the answer to all my complaints about an SUV. I always loved driving SUVs but hated how sluggish/unresponsive they are and how they handle like a boat.

(Side note: however, I am nervous about the upkeep….I had a used 24 X5M feel in love with it….but recently sold it to ordered a new one because it kept having problems after the integrated brake recall repair done at my local BMW)

We have had a plethora of X3s over the years (5 if I recall) as well as two Mazdas (CX5 and CX30) not to mention all of the BMW autos ( I currently have an M4 Comp X).

The wife was driving an i4 M50 after the latest X3 she had. She really liked the i4, but missed the higher seating height of the SUV. We have also went from one dog to three dogs so we decided to give the X5 a shot. Have to say it’s a fantastic vehicle! Comfy, quiet, great looking and performs well even with the base B58. And fits the three dogs in the back seat lol.

There is a huge difference in ride quality and materials between the X3 and the X5. I love the B58 engine,.

Former cayenne owner. Went away from SUV world for a bit but needed one again due to kid/family needs. Actually wanted to get back into a cayenne but porsche pricing is absolutely nuts these days for what you get. X5 has more power, more tech and luxury in terms of bang for buck.

But....porsche handles better. Anyone who disputes that likely has not tried both.

Had a 2017 Ford Expedition King Ranch with a 8 people seating capacity; didnt need that any more so I "downgraded" to a 5 seater with more bells and whistles....2023 X5MC... :)

I just took delivery of my 2026 X5 but they forgot the dogs? :D I have to talk to the dealer about that option. You will win as the cutest new BMW picture with that one.
Enjoy the car and the dogs.

Sterling13's user avatarSterling13 Congratulations!!! I think you're going to absolutely have a blast driving your new X5 once it comes in.

I brought home my first BMW in 2012 and haven't looked back. I've historically only owned 3 Series (and still have a 330i xDrive) but this January, picked up my very first X5 (same model as you; 2026 X5 xDrive40i). It was time to bring home an SUV to more easily handle homeowner tasks (just finished building a house) but also to travel more comfortably locally, have a little more room than is needed, and to have a workhorse in the winter (though my 3 Series has always handled snow like a boss; never had any issues in winter storms with it).

BMW reliability is top-notch in my opinion. They handle extremely well (as you mentioned feeling when you test drove the X5) and as long as you take care of them, they'll take care of you.

Keep us posted once it comes in. Congrats again!

Thanks lol. Definitely lots of dog food and routine vet bills. But we have a field close by the house so it gets all the fertilizer it needs lol.
