You can tell this further by just pressing the button on and off during driving and hearing the audio change drastically. Interior exhaust sounds do get more aggressive sounding on Sport/Sport+ mode. It even mimics burples at certain speeds.I cannot answer for the LCI, but in my 2023 X5MC my observation is the button controls artificial exhaust sound input to the cabin only and is on by default but can be turned off permanently in M1 and M2 modes.
The exhaust flaps, at least in the pre LCI, are binary- either fully open or fully closed.
