2024 X5M, original owner, ~40K miles. I suspect my issue isn't unique to the M (despite the unique M iDrive interface), so posting this in the general forum for more traffic.

For the past month or two, my climate control has been very aggressive with cooling when it really doesn't need to be. Example: Get in the car first thing in the morning, garaged ~70F overnight, outdoor temp ~55F. System set to 70F, driver/passenger torso vent control set to "middle", fan to Auto/Sync/Lo or Medium. And the thing is blowing cold air like it's 100F outside. Fan kicks up to a fairly high/loud setting, and the animated blue graphic in the temperature display shows a big blue bar indicating the system thinks it has a lot of work to do to get to the set temperature.

Any ideas why it thinks lots of cooling is needed when the cabin is already at or below the setpoint and it's even colder outside? This was never an issue until recently. If anything I had wished I could get more cold air. Sure, I can re-aim the vents or turn them off/down, but that doesn't explain the change in system behavior.

Change your inner “vent temp” or now called “Upper body Temp” for the iD8.5 for the driver and passenger and see how the system responds. Just change it all the way warmer and see how the system responds in the actual temp from the middle vents. You can keep your “air flow” fan speed preferences to low. Then leave it in “auto” and “sync”to lock the system to work together.

While in auto and sync change the set temperature to max Hi (hot) and set the upper body temperature in the middle. Wait for a minute and see if it's blowing warm air and flashing red on the cp. If it does blow warm air and flashing red you can start lowering the set temperature by a notch or two. Wait a bit and see if it's still flashing red. If it does you can return to your normal temperature.

Appreciate the suggestions. But I still consider those workarounds. I know how to adjust to get hotter or colder overall or just upper body (I tinker with upper body fairly often to adjust for sun/cloud, for example). But workarounds don't explain why it's behaving so differently lately.

I'm wondering if one of the cabin zone sensors is glitching/dying and making the system think the cabin is hotter than it is. I suppose forcing full hot might help diagnose that.

It's not all bad - we already have an early spike into the 90's today, and the cabin cooled unusually quickly after sitting in the work parking lot all day.

I had actually experienced the opposite of you during hot day. While i tried to cool down the cabin temperature, the rear ac was sending max hot air even though the setting was synced. At first i thought the temperature probe was faulty but the front was blowing cool air. So i jumped to the back seat and set the temperature to Lo (minimum temperature). It actually reset the temperature regulation.

In industry they usually use PID control, probably for some reason the Integral value was not reset or too big to be corrected. By setting to min or max, i was hoping the integral value or maybe there was other glitch in the controller. There was another possibility that the hot/cool air mixture flap could be stuck.
