Woodcliff Lake/Cernobbio – May 15, 2026… Revealed at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Vision BMW ALPINA is a design study that heralds a new era for a brand defined by extreme capability, sophistication, and the mastery of both performance and comfort.

“Alpina has always represented a very specific idea of performance and refinement—where speed and comfort are complementary ambitions. Our role as the new custodians of this brand is to preserve this distinctiveness and shape it for a contemporary context,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design. “Vision BMW ALPINA shows how these qualities can be expressed with discipline and modernity, suggesting what our direction is for this brand as we move it into the future.”

DESIGN AND FORM: THE SHAPE OF SPEED

The Vision BMW ALPINA is a respectful interpretation of the brand’s heritage, shaped by the most contemporary creative instincts. At 204.7 inches in length, its presence is substantial: wide, low, and confident. The coupé roofline is long and raked, its form immediately signals both speed and the ability to accommodate four adults in genuine comfort. A V8 powertrain drives the experience, tuned to produce the characteristic notes of the Alpina exhaust: rich and deep at low speed, sonorous at high revs.

“In Vision BMW ALPINA, we distill every element of the brand to its essence and apply it in a deeply modern and sophisticated way,” says Maximilian Missoni, head of BMW Design Midsize & Luxury Cars and BMW ALPINA. “Every detail reflects substance: in engineering, in materials, and in the story it tells. The statements it makes are subtle and revealed only on a closer read.

This interplay between purity and richness defines our approach to BMW ALPINA design.” The front end is defined by powerful volumes and a forward-leaning stance that promises speed without overstatement. The shark nose—a signature that traces back to the Alpina B7—reinterprets BMW’s kidney grille as a three-dimensional sculpture that leads the car’s form and frames the brand emblem with quiet confidence.

From this shark nose, the exterior is organized around a single visual axis: the speed feature line. Rising from the lower front corners at a six-degree inclination, it runs along the side of the body and wraps around the rear—assertive enough to suggest motion, controlled enough to remain refined.

HALLMARKS AND PRINCIPLES: “SECOND READ” SOPHISTICATION

Subtle secondary details reward attention without demanding it. This “Second Read” principle runs throughout the Vision BMW ALPINA.

Deco-lines have been part of Alpina’s language since 1974. For the Vision BMW ALPINA, the modernized deco-lines are distilled and painted on the side of the body beneath the clear coat—a quiet gesture that reflects how the brand’s defining details can be adapted to what comes next.

Inward-facing return surfaces are treated with particular care, finished in a dark metallic tone that rewards a closer read. This approach is inspired by the BMW 507, which uses chrome only on the inside of its kidney grilles.

The shark nose captures the same “Second Read” sophistication: the inner surfaces feature a finely scaled signature Deco-line graphic, while a concealed, softly backlit perimeter reveals it only when active.

A warm white tone characterizes the daytime running lights and traces the kidney surrounds, inspired by the first light over the Bavarian Alps. Clear-cut illuminated crystals add a precise highlight within the slender lamps.

The elliptical four-pipe exhaust remains, as does the “ALPINA” lettering—reinterpreted as a machined, polished metal element on the lower front apron. The 22-inch front and 23-inch rear wheels feature the 20-spokes design that has been a constant at Alpina since 1971.

INTERIOR AND DETAILS: ARCHITECTURAL CLARITY

The cabin is generous in every sense: space, material quality, and the care with which technology has been integrated. Architectural volumes define the layout, with each element designed as a standalone form, not absorbed into a homogeneous interior.

The six-degree speed feature line continues through the interior, dividing the darker upper segment and the lighter lower segment. Full-grain leather— sourced from producers across the Alpine region—pairs with stitching inspired by the Deco-lines.

Craft details are restrained but well considered: a bridge stitch inspired by historic steering wheel hand-stitching appears sparingly in heritage blue and green colors, while a watchmaking-inspired beveling technique was used for the metal components, combining satin and polished finishes. Clear-cut crystal is reserved for the controls that shape how the automobile drives, underlining the value BMW ALPINA places on the driving experience itself.

Behind the rear console, a glass water bottle sits beside BMW ALPINA crystal glasses that rise on a self-deploying mechanism. Each glass is engraved with 20 deco-lines and features a six- degree rim profile, held by concealed magnets and softly lit against the open-grain center console.

A COMFORTABLE DRIVER IS A FASTER DRIVER

Burkard Bovensiepen understood something much of the automotive world has forgotten: a comfortable driver is a faster driver. That belief remains central to the Vision BMW ALPINA.

Alpina offers Comfort+, a setting beyond the standard BMW comfort calibration that delivers a more supple, refined character, and it is retained here.

BMW Panoramic iDrive, including the new passenger screen, spans the dashboard with a digital UI language crafted specifically for BMW ALPINA. Heritage blue and green are introduced with discipline, intensifying as the driver moves from Comfort+ to Speed mode
within the BMW Panoramic Vision head-up display. The background imagery is equally considered. The Alpine landscape depicted is an exact rendering of the mountain range visible when looking south from Buchloe.

ROOTED IN THE BRAND’S ORIGINS

The Alpina story began in 1965 in Buchloe, Germany, a small Bavarian town in the shadow of the Alps. Burkard Bovensiepen—destined for a career in typewriter manufacturing—chose instead high-performance tuning, founding Alpina and then refining BMW road and racing cars.

From the outset, his philosophy was clear: speed and comfort were complementary, not competing ambitions.

In endurance racing, while rivals stripped weight, Burkard added extra padding to the driver’s seat: he understood that a more comfortable driver is a faster driver. That insight carried over to the road cars that followed, celebrated for composure and sophistication at high speed over long distances.

ALPINA B7 COUPÉ: A POINT OF MATURITY

The Alpina B7 coupé of the late 1970s marked a turning point: Alpina’s philosophy was applied to a luxury car, and every model that followed was recognized as luxurious. Based on the BMW E24 6 Series, its long hood, wide stance, and shark nose looked fast even at rest, while the cabin could comfortably carry four people across a continent. The Vision BMW ALPINA is the next chapter of that story.

BMW ALPINA—AN EXCLUSIVE BRAND WITHIN THE BMW GROUP

BMW ALPINA became an exclusive brand within the BMW Group in 2026, bringing proven stewardship and a clear responsibility: to understand what Alpina means to those who cherish it and to honor that in what follows.

"BMW ALPINA fills a gap in our portfolio between BMW and Rolls-Royce as we see even more potential in the high-end segment. With Alpina we have a strong legacy and a global community, which we want to build on, while preserving the essence of what the brand stands for—speed, comfort and sophistication,“ says Oliver Viellechner, head of BMW ALPINA.

Next year, customers will be able to experience the first model of the BMW ALPINA brand—inspired by the BMW 7 Series, but unmistakably BMW ALPINA.
I’ve been a gearhead since college, but my latest project is a ’BMW F32 Coupe arriving in about two weeks.
I’ve already got a list of things to dive into, so expect plenty of questions once it lands. I’ve been following the threads here for a while and I’m stoked to finally join the crew.

Hi guys,

New to Bimmerpost but thought this would be the best place to get a definitive answer on this.

What happened was I was cleaning my car on my drive and opened the bonnet to fill it up with washerfluid and noticed white crusty stuff like as if a bit of chalk had been grated and sprinkled around the engine bay.

I thought 'WTF?!', then cleaned it - knowing I'd research it online later.

When I got back into my car, my drive is fucked at the moment so I'm on an incline and I had the BMW ping and it said 'coolant low stop immediately' or something - this is the first time it has done this.

I thought 'OK, so I'm on an incline, I'll turn off the car then back on when I'm parked on flat land', did this and the ping didn't come back. Then I read online and seen it could be a coolant leak on the cap.

I checked the coolant level and it was WAY BELOW MINIMUM - so I didn't want to drive I couldn't even see the coolant in there when you unscrew it.

So then I sent a friend to a car parts shop locally, who came back to me with coolant but it's this;

Attachment 3958572

He said the guy in the shop said this can be mixed with the coolant already in there so it's fine. But he said 'dont mix it with water'...

So I filled it upto minimum and then took it to BMW, not a specialist actual BMW because my car is under BMW warranty until August.

In BMW - they sent me a video saying 'there was a bit of dried coolant around the cap so I assume this is spillage from when it was being filled', saying they also did a compression test and found no leaks. I explained to the girl to check the bottle in the boot (in the pic) and like 3/4rds of it was used so there will be a leak and I wiped away the crust. She was argumentitve saying WE WONT POUR IT OUT TO MEASURE IT and I was like what? Just feel it in your hand you can estimate to get an idea of how much I've put into the car...

Anyway, in the video the mechanic said he's 'topped it up to full', but didn't mention if he's used deonisised water for this, or coolant.

So - if BMW just put water into the coolant tank effectively my car will have had like 0.75litres of Granville and maybe 0.25litres of water...mixed with the BMW coolant already in there that came in it from previous BMW services or top ups by BMW (it's full BMW service history).

I also bought a coolant cap from BMW when I was there and it feels much better. It isn't 'tight' unscrewing it and screwing it on, it 'clips' into the locking position, so I really do think the o-ring on the other one was fucked and that's why all the dried coolant was escaping but the mechanic just assumed it was dried coolant due to lack of communication and not dealing with him directly.

I also bought another 2 bottles of real BMW coolant just in case it wasn't leaking from the cap or I need to top it up so I've got a load in the shed lol, anyway my car may have the below three things in it;

Attachment 3958575

It's a 2017 120i F20 2litre B48 engine.

It's really a beautiful car and I paid £9k for it so I want to treat her nicely and make sure she's looked after.

Is having these three things in the coolant bad? I've got 3 litres of actual BMW coolant so if need be I can go back to them, buy more of the official coolant and then take it to a garage just to empty all the coolant however they would do this and then top it up with only the best official BMW coolant. Or is this uncessary and the car is OK to have those three things in it?

Advice much appreciated thank you. :)

BMW will preview the future of Alpina on Friday with the unveiling of a new concept car.

The Vision BMW Alpina will be revealed at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza on 15 May, the company has confirmed, marking its first big presentation since the Alpina brand entered BMW ownership in January.

A teaser image released by BMW Alpina reveals it to be a long coupé – similar in profile to the previous BMW 8 Series and the limited-run Speedtop – and appears to show new lighting signatures that could be reserved specifically for future Alpina models.

This suggests that new models under the sub-brand could be more greatly differentiated from the BMWs on which they are based than in the past, cars such as the 3 Series-based B3 having been comparatively subtle.

It also suggests that Alpina could be preparing its own bespoke cars in what would be a first for the marque: its historic cars were all based on mass-produced BMWs.

As recently reported by Autocar, the first new-age Alpinas to hit showrooms will be based on the 7 Series limousine and X7 SUV.

BMW Group R&D chief Joachim Post said the brand “will talk not about sport but speed, comfort and luxury”, in keeping with its past.

It will be “completely different from a level which other people like from [BMW’s M cars], which is the performance”.

BMW previously said Alpina would also major on personalisation, offering a broad range of options and focusing on high-quality materials.

Hey guys, new here and hoping to get some advice.

I'm looking at buying a 18MY M3C from a main dealer, looked over the vehicle yesterday and its gorgeous, strong spec, FSH, drives like a dream and has around 50K miles on the clock.

Everything looked good, but of course some things are always too good to be true.

Looking through the service history of the car, I noticed that it's had the cylinder head gasket replaced under warranty back in October 2025.

This instantly raised eyebrows for me, as I know it's no small job and generally the S55 is a solid engine when maintained correctly.

If I was to go ahead and buy the vehicle, it would come with a 12month unlimited mileage warranty with BMW that I can also extend after that has expired. I'm waiting on some more info as to the reason why it was replaced which I should hopefully receive on Monday.

But this is where I wanted to pose this question to you fine people and see what you think with your experience (this will be my first BMW), has anyone else here needed to have a head gasket replaced on an F80, would you avoid?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

The washer fluid that came from the factory in my car smells absolutely amazing.
Sadly it’s low and I need to refill it. Does anyone know what it is and where I can buy some? My dealer didn’t know.

07.05.2026 Press Release

+++ Pre-chamber combustion patented by BMW celebrates its premiere. High-efficiency new development makes its series production debut in BMW M models and enables a significant reduction in fuel consumption under high loads. New ignition process is a prime example of the transfer of technology from racing cars to series-production models and helps to meet the requirements of the EU7 standard. Production of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 with BMW M Ignite technology begins in July 2026; the new engine technology will be available for the BMW M2 from August 2026. +++

Munich. With BMW M Ignite technology, a new engine technology patented by BMW in 2024 is set to enter series production. This new kind of pre-chamber ignition system for petrol engines will debut in the six-cylinder in-line units for the BMW M2, BMW M3 and BMW M4 from mid-2026. One of its standout benefits is a significant reduction in fuel consumption under high loads – during track use, in particular. This new engine innovation has its roots in motor sport, making it another example of the transfer of technology from the race track to the road. And it also plays a major role in meeting the stringent requirements of the Euro 7 standard.

The centrepiece of BMW M Ignite technology is the pre-chamber positioned within the cylinder head. It is connected with the cylinder’s main combustion chamber by overflow openings. The pre-chamber has its own spark plug and ignition coil, meaning the engine has two ignition systems.

At low and medium revs, the conventional spark plug in the main combustion chamber fires before the spark plug in the pre-chamber. But when the engine is operating under higher revs and loads, the pre-chamber ignition takes over the lead role, with part of the fuel-air mixture channelled through the openings into the pre-chamber also ignited there. The flames generated as a result exit the pre-chamber at around the speed of sound.

These ignition jets then ignite the mixture in the main combustion chamber above the piston at multiple points at the same time. The result is a significantly higher combustion speed. Meanwhile, the possible cause of uncontrolled combustion – i.e. “knocking” – is also countered effectively. An additional effect of this technology is a drop in the temperature of the exhaust gas.

Other new technical features alongside the pre-chamber ignition include a higher compression ratio and turbochargers with variable turbine geometry.

BMW M Ignite technology boosts the efficiency of the six-cylinder in-line engines dramatically, especially when the engine is being pushed to its limits. Under high loads, fuel consumption drops substantially. This is particularly beneficial for BMW M customers who drive their cars on race circuits – e.g. during track days: the fuel consumption reduction enabled by BMW M Ignite technology means they can keep lapping for longer on the same amount of fuel.

As well as these efficiency gains, BMW M Ignite technology also helps to meet the new European Euro 7 standard, which will come into force in November 2026. In this way, BMW M is ensuring the high-performance cars fitted with this technology will continue to meet European registration requirements in the future. The new engines therefore represent another instance of technology from racing cars making its way into series-production models.

All variants of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 will come with BMW M Ignite technology from July 2026. Production of the BMW M2 featuring this technology will get underway in August 2026. The displacement and power outputs of all the models with BMW M Ignite technology will be unchanged from those of the corresponding outgoing engines.

My neighbor has a 2025 or 2026 X3. I was asking him how he liked it. He said that he drives pretty hard and he averages 31 mpg. He does not do much interstate driving. This is pretty amazing fuel mileage.
