I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.

I'm considering purchasing a BMW X5 xDrive40i, which would also be my first BMW. Before moving forward, I'd love to hear from current or former owners about their experiences.

What are some common issues or concerns I should be aware of before buying? Are there any known reliability problems, maintenance costs, or ownership surprises that a first-time BMW owner should consider?

Any advice, recommendations, or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

When I unlock the car with my key fob the left side rear view mirror opens every time. So it’s not broken. I also rebooted idrive but that didn’t help.
Everytime when I walk away from my car both side view mirrors close. But only the right side view mirror opens when I approach.

Is this a software glitch or a bug in the latest OTA? I’m on 11/2025.50

What could cause this malfuncion?

My ‘24 40i had an eruption of notifications yesterday - suspension, driving assistance, blind spot and a couple others - after starting it in my garage. The steering was incredibly hard to turn. I tried to trickle charge the battery but no luck. Also tried to reset iDrive but couldn’t clear the alerts. Roadside assistance had to transport it to the dealer.

Before they took it, I put my battery tester on the charge points under the hood. The battery showed up as bad (Replace). Will a standard battery checker produce an accurate reading with this being a hybrid? It seems like this is all some electrical issue since all of these systems did not go bad all at once (at least I hope not!).

The dealer said they reset the system with software not through iDrive - and all is working. They plan to keep it until next week to see if the issue resurfaces.

Anyone else experience something similar?

Has this happened to anyone before? Seems like a scam somehow but also wondering if there was a recent BMW data breach I'm not aware of.

We did have an X3 leased and both keys were returned, but now I'm worried that not all user data stored to the key fobs in iDrive was somehow not deleted when we returned at lease end. But also why wouldn't they just contact BMW for the spare?

A member reached out to me via DM about buying a 50e vs a 40i. I started writing a response to address his questions and ended up writing a novel. Thought I would share for anyone else in a similar position.

HANDLING:
The 40i is the lightest and you can throw it around easily compared to the other two. That said, I feel my M60 with air suspension handles the best out of those three. The car is really planted and can push 1.0G on the meter. I know it's heavier and you feel that, but it is a lot easier to push hard than the other two. 50e and M60 had the staggered setup both with air suspension vs the 40i on basic tires/suspension.

POWER:
The 40i is a dog compared to the other two. Just gutless. So much so that when the 50e was lemoned, we ordered an M60 rather than the 40i, despite the reputation for reliability between the two. The 40i has decent power up top but nothing below 3K. The 50e I felt is the quickest below 60 in Sport mode, that instant ePower plus the motor makes it pretty peppy. Power delivery is a little weird, you can feel it come and go, but it's strong. The M60 has some lag, but once it's going it's great, and beyond 60 you can really feel the power difference. What I like is the M60 has all the horses all the time, whereas the 50e you have to be in Sport mode to access all that power, and preferably with a warmed-up motor if you're hammering on it. The 50e in electric mode is not bad, if I recall around 200HP with a 0-60 of about 10 seconds, and plenty zippy up to 30. We got around 2 miles/kWh. The M60 is the quickest though, slightly faster to 60, then pulls harder than the 50e, and in triple digits it's noticeable. The 40i is a dog compared to those two.

FUEL:
The M60 is averaging about 16MPG. The 40i would get low 20s, but it was always a loaner so not driven gently. It could get high 20s on the highway vs. low 20s for the V8. The 50e is a strange beast. If you're on any road trip with grades it could deliver low 30s. I came back from the Redwoods in Eureka and averaged 40MPG. If you set cruise, it really harvests energy hard on the downhills rather than braking, then you can deploy that in all-electric during your drive. If you have free power via your setup, that is a solid selling point, zero cost to run. The all-electric mode is plenty of power. We ran our car in E mode only for about 60% of the miles, all town driving, electric only. You could go months without hitting a gas station. Our 50e running on PG&E was a wash in costs, which stinks since you only get 200HP. If I had solar or lived in a state with reasonable power pricing I would feel differently, but PG&E fleeces me daily at over 50 cents a kWh.

RELIABILITY:
I feel all BMWs are not particularly reliable. My M60 might be sipping oil and it's brand new, not normal, but after a year it has only had one check engine light (think fuel cap) and zero issues. The 40i, I don't know, probably had it for seven weeks but no check engine lights or issues. The 50e was a complete train wreck. It spent nine weeks in the shop and was flatbedded once. My M60 lives at the gas station and the 50e lived at the dealership. It had the VANOS fail twice. They left extra parts in the wheels from the factory. The HVB controller failed, which required them to disassemble the entire trunk (they even left me some tools, maybe so I could do it quicker myself next time) and that required bleeding the AC system. The AC never worked the same after. Speaking of AC and heat, the 50e can run that without the motor running, which is awesome. Hot day or sitting around for 30 minutes, just run the AC without the motor. Anyway, off topic, the transmission failed and was replaced, which is a $35K job. So many things broke on that car and I know I'm missing some. Despite all my time lost going to the dealer, not being at work, picking up the car, finding out it wasn't fixed properly, and going back, BMW was very understanding and made it right. We took one last trip in her and then dropped her off. The person processing our paperwork said this car was a train wreck, as did the service manager. So we ended up with a new M60 and have not regretted it yet.

THOUGHTS:
Avoid the 50e unless you enjoy gambling in Vegas. It's a great car when it works. Check the boards, I am not alone and the issues run all the way through the current model year. If you have free power it's worth considering. If you are not going to keep it beyond warranty, it's worth considering. The air suspension is great. If you can swing the M60, I'd go there and get the air suspension. If cost is more of an issue and you want a reliable car, the 40i is the safe bet, it just lacks the power, IMHO. Not sure what to do about the suspension on it though. We really love the air suspension and when lowered it's not bad. No one tracks an SUV unless they have a screw loose. It's plenty solid, but I find all the other suspensions are donkey-cart-like.

It’s clear when you select trailer mode in idrive the assisted drive option goes away but I have a different question. We are making a long drive which is why I purchased assisted drive BUT we need to install a cargo carrier into the factory supplied trailer hitch. (I know if I plug the trailer cords in that I can’t turn off trailer mode) So here is my scenario: I will select trailer mode when backing out of the garage and pulling into rest stops but take it off while on the interstate for hundreds of miles so I can use assisted drive. I am not seeing a safety issue with this (I would never do it while hauling a trailer). Everything that I have read indicates impacts only when backing up when not in trailer mode.

Has anyone tried this or better yet does anyone actually do this?
I am ready to purchase a carrier but wanted to be sure that it would work with assisted drive first.

Thanks for any insight that you can provide.

•	Transfer Case has seepage at the seam. (Last year July 2025 BMW replaced the T.C fluid at 44851 miles.
Today’s mileage is 55937 with seepage. (11k miles differences)

•	Electric Power Steering (EPS) rack with integrated electronics has seepage from the top.

My independent mechanic noticed fluid residue on top of the non-hydraulic EPS rack. He tried to trace this to see if it is melting factory grease or a leak from a higher engine component."

•	Oil pan also has seepage BMW did an oil change at 53k miles which was DEC.2025. Today oil changed 55937 less than 3k miles later seepage.

Tech mentions I should take it to BMW.

The transfer case and oil pan would that fall under BMW service warranty?

How would you handle this with the service dept I go see them tomorrow?
Thanks for any instructions.

Ordered an Individual paint X5M on December 3rd. It's built buy has been stuck in a quality check status for 3-4 weeks now. Dealer can't give me answers and neither can BMW. They said the most likely cause is back ordered parts required to complete assembly.

Has anyone had luck softening the ride by switching to Michelin cross climate tires?
