Right on, couldn't have said it better.
Based on current generation of BMW, so F10 and previous (now outgoing) version of E Class, it's an absolutely no contest in my opinion. Things might be different with new generation of both cars, but usually aren't, both brands have their own strengths and new models, while different, aren't likely to drastically alter that.
Outgoing E series has great fit and finish, very luxurious, looks OK, is a bit smaller inside (especially front headroom and overal in the back) and seems to be tuned for comfort, long distance highway traveling. It's very good at that, if that's your thing. Driving them both back to back, if you value spirited driving/driving dynamics, the difference is staggering between the two. F10 (and Audi A6 while we're at it) are both a lot better than outgoing E class. Both are still fantastic highway/long distance touring cars, can't really say that E class blows them away in that aspect either.
