BUT - I figured it out (I think someone else pointed that out as well). I changed my iPhone’s name to say “Michael’s iPhone”. It appears BMW does not like that as it looks for just generic “iPhone” to connect to (and yes, I deleted all previously installed devices from the iDrive). After I changed iPHone’s name back to “iPhone”, all is well. I get CarPlay to come up as soon as I enter the car (wirelessly) and I am able to connect to the internet. The cellular indicator on infotainment’s screen in CarPlay mode now says “5G” whereas before it would display a WIFI icon. FWIW, I am on iOS 14.2

Exact same issue. Plus it gets even worse when you have two phones. I've noticed that forgetting the device on both car and iphone doesn't do full wipe. When I erased the "network settings" on the phone the entire enrollment was a breeze. There is definitely some either incompatibility issue or a bug because this shouldn't be a rocket science.
