Yup, almost every BMW F15/F16, G05/6/7 - X5/6/7 owner has heard this noise.

Mine is intermittent - maybe once in 2 months and more so in the winter or cold.

It shouldn't occur all the time but when your electronic adjustable steering wheel stops adjusting - will require a visit to the dealer.

When you notice that you can lift the flap above the steering column that's normal - as it's a cover for the column and adjusts based on saved steering wheel position:
