That's what BMW is onto here and honestly what allows Teslas to be so seamless and good. Tesla makes all their own modules and programs the firmware.

Rivian CEO said their next move is ECU consolidation, starting with R1 in 2024. It is a cost cutting measure, along with other things. It will save thousands per vehicle. He calls it zonal control.
