When accountants take over your business, marketing gets cut normally. Most dealerships I have spoken with say that the BMW wagon buyer is most loyal. But I am guessing most wagon buyers buy their cars and keep them for long term as practical is practical. So some high ranking executive at BMW needs to over rule the accountants and say the wagon is a great marketing item...and then market them. Once you explain how wagons are practical and fun to drive a lot of people get it. Although the weird stigma will probably play on.
