Does the Drive Recorder automatically record and then record over old footage if it isn't downloaded? Is it automatically always recording?

DR is always recording while the engine is running. It is not recording at all with engine off. This is the facility that allows up to 20s pre-trigger recording to be saved. You do not have access to the entire recording, however, only to pre- and post-trigger event clips. Trigger events are only one of a) manual trigger to record, or b) whatever the car sensor set detects as a collision. With all 4 cameras and 20s pre-trigger recordings, you have 10 triggered clips that are stored. I believe there is a setting where it will delete oldest one when you hit number 11, but I am not completely sure. On the other hand, since practically it only records accidents, how many accidents do you anticipate having before downloading or clearing the clips? :-)

Thanks for clarifying. Sounds like one should, theoretically, be able to hit record and get whatever happened in the 20 seconds before hitting record and the 20 seconds after. I'm thinking along the lines of some idiot moves happening and wanting it to be recorded. Guess you could save the Drive Recorder Start Button as a hot Key on the dash and then use it that way.

Yes, when configured as such (which I suspect is by far the most common configuration), you do get 20 seconds of idiocy before and 20 seconds after manual trigger. Unfortunately you can't assign one of the 8 buttons to START recording (but you can assign one to access the DR app, which is a wasted assignment). You can, however, choose DR app as one of the tiles on your home screen and tapping that DOES START recording.

Good to know! Thanks
