The awful votes are most likely European owner as their exhaust has a gasoline particular filter which neuters the sound.

Pops/burbles off throttle? Stock? I've got a Canadian spec x5mc which does not do that. It's very muted. I don't think Canadian cars get the particle filter either. Did you tune or otherwise do something different from stock form?
