I knew about the difference when I got my car but I figured it is what it is - I love having the knee pads and if I can't have both the pads and the lighting, I'll take the pads.
Having said that, my legs are super long so 1) the knee pads are essential as my leg sits right against it, and 2) my legs block most of the centre console from my view when I'm driving so I wouldn't see those lights most of the time anyway
Would be nice to have both, but the BMW gods decided that was not to be...
