Mats are interchangeable between the X5 40i/M50/X5M. I had the oem bmw rear rubber mats and just changed them out for the weathertechs. The weathertechs are better since it covers the middle hump and are easier to clean with less grooves.
Like you said with apple carplay there is no need for the phone to be out. I usually have mine in the wireless charging spot infront of the cup holder or inside the armrest.
