Merino is well worth the $1K upgrade. It's a major step up in leather quality, more comfortable than Vernasca and just as durable. You can visually and feel the difference in leather quality.
Vernasca is nice and it's improved quality over the older Dakota leather. I find that Vernasca/Dakota takes a long time to break in and feel comfortable.
Once you've spent hours on the road and years in BMW nappa or merino it's hard to go back. Your arse will thank you.
