Pisses me off that the cheaper Lincoln Aviator has the feature included free with no subscription cost. I would think that BMW would have learned a lesson from the Apple Carplay fee debacle- but no. Insatiable greed knows no bounds.

Except BMW didn't learn their lesson. My take is based on the timing, BMW had exclusive WIRELESS apple carplay and therefore wanted to capitalize on that (To be fair, they probably did spend money to make this work). They made it free when other competitors had wireless as well. I'm not 100% sure about Audi but I know Benz definitely got wireless carplay in their new cars. I believe even Hyundai is going to start offering wireless carplay.
If you think about it, the luxury automakers try to package the same options. The trend is to include safety features including ACC on all models (even Honda/Hyundai are doing that), but the 3 German auto makers all charge $1500-2200 for those options.
I don't think this is a right/wrong issue, it's just business.
