I think really the benefit of kickdown switches over using the paddles is that kickdown causes a shift to the lowest gear possible.

Example of cruising in 7th or 8th gear at maybe 40 mph (not sure how fast you have to cruise to be in 8th) and you suddenly want to pass someone or get to speed quickly. Kickdown switch would drop it to second gear straight away, while paddles would require you to shift down sequentially through all the gears before you get to the lowest possible gear.
