I thought it was because LED headlights do not get as hot therefore they dont warm the headlight covering in which snow sticks to. Therefore they are not needed for the newer lights

On a longer trip i would usually wipe the headlights anyways when stopping at rest stops for refueling, etc..
That is why Volvo uses heated water jets to wash the led headlights. I think it is a must have in Scandinavian countries.
