not everyone has been able to remove the silver volume ring (easy for some; nearly impossible for others, myself included). the theory is that different heads units are used. if you can remove the silver ring, it makes removing the button easier, but drilling and popping off the volume button has only recently been reported to be successful, mainly for those that haven't been able to remove the silver ring.
