I’m curious, what is the technical difference between the M-sport and standard brake on the X5/X6? I just went and looked and my standard brake appears to be a 4-piston fixed caliper design. Does M-sport get you a larger rotor and better pad compound?

Generally speaking though, in initial braking, the quality of your tires is going to impact your stopping distance the most. Antilock braking systems are already applying the maximum amount of braking force, and the rest depends on how sticky and wide the rubber contact patch is on your tires.

Where a sport brake comes into play is when you’re doing repetitive hard braking or very high speed braking because the larger rotor, extra pistons and pad compound is more resistant to heat which prevents fade. So if you’re just a regular person driving your X5 on public roads in a regular way, with rare instances of emergency braking to avoid an accident, it’s doubtful you will ever know the difference between m-sport and normal brakes.
