X3 is right on its heels with probably larger sales volume .. and with X3M and X3M Comp and perhaps a CS in two years .. I expect it to be right there to take the baton ...
A super strong possibility.

I need to seriously go drive the X3M.
Went and sat in one. The new X3 is pretty large actually. I had an X3m30 loaner and felt It might just be too large for me. The X3M looks terrific and I'm sure it's quicker than snot, and probably handles well but its a lot more truckish than I want. Definitely a mini X5 ... It's a great one vehicle solution type item , better even than the F80 M3 perhaps in that regard.. but the tailgate has a lot higher liftover than I would like and there is a lot of hood.
It would be cool if they made a smaller X3 Sport.

I agree the current X3 is a bit larger then I need for my use.

It's unfortunate that the X1 isn't rear biased xDrive. It looks like a baby X3 to me.
