This is so true. While I took a tour of the Munich factory, I asked the tour guide about this exact thing. They showed how the parts internal to even the engine are different, and not to mention the parts for suspension and other components. He made it very clear to make a non M car a full M you would end up simply rebuilding from frame out.. I know a bit sale pitch but you can identify within the factory the M spec and well the rest are all the same. Even the parts bins are different colored for M cars.
