I leave it in hybrid or adaptive on the highway and usually let the car do what it wants with the battery. Keep in mind that even if you are out of battery range on the dash, the battery is not completely dead. The car saves some back for other functions. This results in most of the trip using the engine, but honestly I'm getting pretty good mileage out of the engine too - usually 28-30. Can't complain about that.
