Coming from a Honda owner experience, maybe I need to lower my expectations about the reliability of BMW? Trade off between reliability and power, would the N55 in the 40i be a more balanced than the N63?
40i uses the B58B30M1 which is second gen version of the B58 engine.

50i uses the N63TU3 (slightly different variants in 50i and M50i). This is third generation of the engine. I wouldn't be concerned about problems with the earlier versions.
This guy talks specifically about the problem with this latest generation of N63 engine. He names it as the most unreliable BMW engine

It was posted on the Internet so it must be authentic.

While this guy is right that the N63 has struggled with heat, oil consumption, etc. he did the 50i models a disservice by lumping them all together. The G05/G07 uses the technical update 3 version which has additional improvements including better heat shielding to protect components in the vee. This engine was first used during 2018 for 2019 G05/G07.

Where he's also wrong is he includes the 650i in the same sentence while discussing other models including the new 7 series, etc. The 650i never even used technical update 2 of the N63. The 650i used the original N63 and then the first technical update.
