Unfortunately, modern paints tend to be vulnerable to stone chips. Like you I do not like or intend to put a film on my cars. I touch up the chips as they happen and call it a day. If you plan to keep the vehicle long term, having a front end resprayed every 3-4 years I feel that is a better option than covering the paint with film. YMMV.
