Well I meant "new" in the haven't-been-doing-this-20-years sense. New assembly lines, new suppliers and/or new demand on those suppliers, new models (which includes 45e differences between the EU and NA), etc. That's a lot of new models, tech, assembly, config, etc.
My understanding is the batteries are Samsung batteries and the PHEV tech is toyota, so in theory that's been around for awhile, but the applications and assembly would be new.
The "impurities in the battery" could be worrisome as this can be the thing that starts fires: essentially the impurities can form little stalactites which grow between the plates and once they get big enough to punch through they short circuit the battery. To be clear I have absolutely no idea if that's what's going on here, just expanding on a post I read that mentioned the recall may be due to battery impurities.
