FWIW, at least in NH, while they used to do a tailpipe emissions test, now, they look only at the computer to see if there are any faults.
If a mechanic disables any emission control equipment in a vehicle, it's a federal hit...now, how they would get involved would likely depend on what the state alerted them to, which, in many places just doesn't happen.

If your state runs actual exhaust pipe testing, by the time you drove there, the vehicle was likely at full operating temperature, and it would not show a hit. But, each time you do a cold start, you'd be putting more pollutants into the air, all to just sound better to you.
