oooh... pet peeves! One of my many linguistic pet peeves is using the term "rate of speed" - as in "he was traveling at a high rate of speed." This seems to have become acceptable usage. Speed is rate, as it measures change in position v. time. Speed is a rate people... stop being sesquipedalian!

Rate is defined thusly... "a measure, quantity, or frequency, typically one measured against some other quantity or measure.
"the crime rate rose by 26 percent""
