Not to bury the lead... this is pretty exciting news that BMW is advancing the software within a month of general availability of the X5.
Distribution methodology aside, it's good news.
[Edit Feb 12th, 2019] Or not good news at all really. Seems BMW are just doing small incremental updates in-line, during assembly... But not making the updates available over the air. Worse - the point "updates" don't really seem to solve much... Two months later and the list of bugs is long and growing - with no updates to date for owners....
