I agree that Mazda has made some good changes. That said, if they want to try and set themselves apart from Honda, Toyota, etc as a more premium vehicle, I feel they need to address two more areas:

I definitely agree there. They're developing a compact Inline-6 paired with an 8-Speed Auto that will likely make its way into the lineup in the future so that should be pretty interesting. The Turbo 2.5 they currently have is pretty good, while an enthusiast like myself may want more, for the general public its likely more than enough.
