I had a rat intrusion accident in a garage when I left some candies in the trunk for a hot summer week.
It was interesting to notice that of the three candy types available they ate only two. It made me wonder even though I'm no scientist.
Never left any food since - no recurrence. And yes, I used some spray around the garage too (not sure it worked).
AFAIK rats prefer cars parked close to scrapyards. That is they appear attracted by food first, warmth in cold weather next. It should be worth it keeping the garage clean/tidy. No food.
