Yes, paper air filters are (of course) still in the car. They are in the lower section of the airboxes.
The darker grey filters are located in the top half of the airboxes... and they are now gone.
I haven't driven the car much. No difference is sound. I imagine there is probably a small hp increase, probably only noticeable at high RPMs. I mean, there has to be, I removed literally HALF of the airflow restriction. I posted many more pictures in the engine forum, about the M550i K&N filter thread. But since doing so, several folks went out and removed theirs too.
One person mentioned that in the old F85 models, those charcoal filters were worth like 15 rwhp.
Worthwhile note.... EU cars don't have them
