I noticed that inconsistancy too. The other takeaway from the BMW owners manual is that chains only go on the rear wheels. I always thought you needed tires on all four wheels on AWD. Maybe I was mixing it up with 4 wheel drive, who knows.
I have never needed chains for my AWD Explorer but I carry chains case. I'll get the fine link chains for the G05, just for the rear, and plan to never have to put them on.
